Samuel Barrett Pettengill (1886-1974) was born in Portland, Or., where his father edited the Portland Oregonian. After the death of his mother he and his father returned to the family farm in Grafton, Vermont. Pettengill graduated from Yale Law School and began his law practice in South Bend, Ind. James Penrose Harland was a graduate of the Princeton University Class of 1913. Following graduation he went on to become a professor of classical archaeology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1923-1945.
